Abstract

Centering around the “jianghu” space constructed in Ang Lee’s wuxia (martial arts chivalry) film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon this thesis illustrates the relativity between space and the construction of female character modeling by analyzing Jen Yu -- the swordswoman wandering in “jianghu”. Adapted from the wuxia novel of the same name by the old school wuxia novelist (1909-1977) Dulu Wang, the film has drawn enormous worldwide attention to Chinese wuxia films after it became an Oscar winner. The film is intended to exhibit the female characters, especially Jen Yu, in line with Ang Lee’s original purpose. Drawing on the depiction of the swordswoman in King Hu’s films during the era of prosperous Shaw Brothers Studio’s wuxia films, the film revolutionarily gives rise to a swordswoman with complicated qualities in the wuxia world.
